What a shame

While thousands of people came and enjoyed the festival on Saturday it was a shame that some showed a lack of respect for the organisers, emergency services and for the community.

Parking on one side of Parkfield Avenue is suspended on festival day for safety reasons. Should there be an emergency, blue light vehicles need to get onto site as quickly as possible via the Parks depot. Parking is suspended to ensure that even if tradffic is heavy, they can get through.

Unfortunately some people think their convenience is more important than the community’s safety. Shame on you.

Beeston Festival 2025 in photos

The sun shone and the crowds descended in their thousands to Cross Flatts Park to enjoy Beeston Festival yesterday (28 June 2025).

Revellers commented on the fantastic atmosphere and the range of activities and entertainment on offer.

On the main stage the RDC Soldier entertained with his Congolese raps. There was much more to enjoy with sports, children’s activities, the fun fair and the scores of stalls in the bazaar. A diverse range of local groups performed dance routines in the Arena, along with displays of freestyle skateboarding and fire juggling. Musicians and rappers also performed on the cycle powered Roadblock stage to entertain diners in the Food Court.

Festival goer Linda Meikle commented:

“A massive thank you to the organisers and volunteers who made this year’s Beeston Festival what seemed like it was the busiest and best ever. Great Disabled parking now which helped a lot of people. Everything from henna to home made jam and all the regular stalls in between. Most of the local organisations and schools had stalls and the falconry was really interesting. The food stalls were in a circle this time with a great variety and central eating area.”

Angela Gabriel, Chair of the festival committee said:

“Beeston Festival is a large community event which sustains solely from grants, sponsorship and volunteer hours. We rely constantly on support from local people and businesses; last year stall bookings raised over £10,000 for the event.

“We know some people feel our booking fees are high, but this a chance to ‘sell your wares’ to to the 7-10,000 people who attend the event

“Our organising committee are all volunteers, the money raised goes directly to the annual operating budget enabling us to book stages, performers, children’s activities as well as necessaries like insurance, medical cover and licences. As a growing event, our costs increase each year. Our operating costs are around £35,000 each year.”

Stall bookings will close on Friday 30 May 2025, or earlier if all available pitches sell out sooner, so make sure you place your booking in good time.

Annual Report and accounts published

Beeston Festival held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 11 January, reflecting on another successful event in 2023 and looking ahead to 2024.

The Annual Report, which is now available to read and download on the festival website at beestonfestival.org.uk, details how the organising committee plan their work and reflected on the various attractions at the event including live animals, children’s activities, dance and music performances, stalls, food, sport and the fun fair.

The 50 volunteers (not including the committee) who put in 240 hours work on the day were thanked. The festival couldn’t happen without them.

The accounts show that the committee spent over £34,000 staging the festival, and raised almost £23,000 in the year from grants, sponsorship, stall bookings and the fun fair. The deficit was planned for and was in part due to a two year lottery grant received the previous year. The festival’s finances are secure with reserves to ensure that the festival will still go on.

Councillors on the Inner South Community Committe, White Rose Park, DePuy Synthes and Building Blocks nursery were all thanked for their generous support.

A new committee was elected with Sophie Wright joining replacing Andrew Hewitt who was thanked for his hard work. Angela Gabriel, Mark Day, Hannah Marshall and Jeremy Morton we re-elected as Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Event Manager respectively.

The theme of the 2024 festival is sports to reflect the Olympics taking place in Paris this summer. Expect plenty of opportunities to get involved and try new sports and activities.

Festival Chair Angela Gabriel commented:

“2023 was a great success, but we can’t rest on our laurels and there is a lot of hard work to do to make sure this year’s festival is as good if not better. We are always looking for new volunteers to step forward and get involved, both organising in advance and working on the day. If you would like get involved, please email beestonfestival@gmail.com.”
